| NEW SONGWRITERS |
| DUCY LEE RECORDINGS is all about songwriters, specifically the new writers of material for Theatre and Cabaret. Even if I haven't recorded them (yet!) the web pages you can link to from here feature some of the best "tunesmiths" in the world. I want this page to grow and grow. If you write theatrical songs and have a website, please contact me. ducylee@earthlink.net |
In random order:
|
|
CHARLES BLOOM - One of the most intriguing new writers for the theater you are likely to find. Charlie and I have been friends for many years, and his inventiveness and sheer musicality always amaze me. He's in New York now and knocking 'em dead with his talent. Check out his shows "INSOMNIA", "PABLO" [about Picasso] and "HEAVEN KNOWS" and find out what other productions he has going. |
|
MARK WINKLER - Lyricist, Producer, Jazz Singer, Mark is one of the most industrious and talented people I know. He conceived and co-wrote the musical "Too Old For The Chorus", wrote much of "Naked Boys Singing" (and produced the CD) and has a jazz album of his own climbing the chart. (Download his music from his MP3.com site and make him some money!) |
|
OK, this one is a genius! (Quite a few of these writers are!) The world is beginning to discover the many talents of JOHN BUCCHINO, but I've known about them ever since we worked across the street from each other in piano bars in Laguna Beach! John's music is unique, joyful, heartbreaking, and unforgettable. |
|
BRYCE KULAK - The music that this young Canadian writes touches me
in ways I can't quite explain. He reminds me of a cross between
Harry Nilsson and John Lennon, but of course that's ridiculous because
Bryce is completely and uniquely Bryce. He's just starting out, but we all will
be hearing from him. Check out his website and his new CD "TIN CAN TELEPHONE". |
|
|
MICHAEL BITTERMAN -
Michael is a prolific writer for the theater as well as writing commercial
jingles and music for film and TV. Original Cast Records has released the CD
for his off-Broadway show "Five After Eight"
and just released another compilation CD of his theater songs called "The Theater's Never Dark". (I love
that title!) Find out more about Michael and about his studio - he's
also an engineer! - at his website. www.michaelbitterman.com |

|
ANDY BELLING - Andy is an extraordinary songwriter, orchestrator and conductor. He's composed the music for TV shows such as "Grizzly Adams" and "Happy Days" and movies such as "Wizards" and "Starchaser". He serves as Song Writer/Producer/Musical Director for Walt Disney's "SING ME A STORY" for which he also wrote the theme song. He's creating a new musical with the legendary Sherman Brothers called "Merry-Go-Round". I like his songs so much, DUCY LEE has released his latest CD - a collection of Songs For The Young At Heart - entitled "JUST KIDDING". |
|
|
DANIEL NAHMOD - Dan is one of the many writers on this page I might qualify as a genius. Certainly his music touches the heart of every person who hears it. Proficient in many styles of music, Dan is making his mark as one of the best of the new writers of spiritual, New Thought music. My own group - 4 Friends - recording his amazing song "One Power" and his own CD with that title reigns as the best of the genre. A visit to the world of Daniel Nahmod is a trip to the best of yourself and of everyone around you. |
| In addition to her own recordings, MARILYN HARRIS has written songs for BETTE MIDLER, DONNA McKECHINIE, LOLA FALANA and many others. I've yet to meet this lady, but I've worked with her material many times, notably with cabaret and theater diva DEBORAH TRANELLI. She's sensational. |
|
| DAVID SNYDER writes songs, runs an incredible recording facility in North Hollywood, writes songs, orchestrates better than anyone I know, writes songs, and does a killer Jack Benny impression. Did I mention he writes songs? Good ones. |
|
| BILL
LARKIN - OK, I admit to being a jaded, difficult audience,
but Bill Larkin makes me roar with
laughter! His twisted songs about his amazingly dysfunctional
family have been made into a musical and a CD called "Bill's Family Funtime" and is earning
him rave reviews. By the way, you may recognize Bill as the struggling
songwriter on the "Frosted Flakes" TV commercials. To listen to his
strikingly original comedy songs (the one about his Grandfather is
my favorite!) |
|
| ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY
-Simply put, Ann is a brilliant songwriter. She wrote the theme song to
"The Nanny" and
BARBRA STREISAND has put Ann's songs on
two of her albums so far. She has eight - count 'em eight! - CDs of
her own released, each chock-full of her amazing songs. Ann also has
the unique distinction of being Cole Porter's
final collaborator, putting music to an unfinished lyric.
Ann Hampton Callaway is not to
be missed! |
|
|
BABBIE GREEN - I produced Babbie's first CD for Lockett-Palmer Recordings and her new album (a two-CD set!) is out on LML Music. Babbie's amazing songs will sweep you away with their honesty and their melodic beauty. She has a way of putting into a song something you thought only you knew. |
|
|
JIM CARUSO - "The Glamour, The Glitter, The Gutter". Jim is one of my favorite people in the world, and a uniquely funny and twisted cabaret performer. His award-winning act includes many of Jim's song parodies - co-written with some unknown collaborators like, oh, FRED EBB, for instance. Check out what he does to "Shy", "Coffee In A Cardboard Cup" and "My New Celebrity" on his new CD (look to the right). |
|
|
|
DENNIS LIVINGSTON - If you are a cabaret performer looking for new songs or just someone who wonders if they "still write 'em the way they used to", check out this clever songwriter's website. We'll all be hearing more from Dennis! |
|
MINDY JOHNSON - This beautiful harpist is also a Grammy-nominated songwriter in the Gospel field, working with an artist/producer from the rock group Heart to incorporate new instruments into Rock and Pop music, and writing a new musical in big-band and jump-jive grooves called "Something About Love". Attention Singers: she has songs for everyone! |
|

|
| JERRY
STYNER - a songwriter himself, Jerry included one of my songs
("First Moment") on his new
album, on which he sings, plays all the instruments and did all
the arrangements. "One
For The Boys" is
a unique package of gay love songs by Jerry and others. You can
listen to his songs (and mine!) on the site for his CD. |
|
| NOEL KATZ - This native New Yorker writes both the music and lyrics (and often the book) for his shows and has had 11 original musicals produced. His latest was AREA 51: THE MUSICAL at the Sanford Meisner Theater on 11th Avenue which got rave reviews. (I love the wonderful ad: "This musical tell the whole truth about the secret lab under the Nevada Desert - there's quite a bit of singing and dancing going on down there!") |
|
| UNTEMPORARY MUSIC SONG SHOP - Ross Schneider's jazz-oriented site features a large selection of cabaret songs for performers wanting to add another "color" to their shows. (I especially like the song "Journey Through Night (Dreamland)".) Check him out. |
|
| NICHOLAS
LEVIN - Have you ever met yourself coming from the other
direction? NICK LEVIN
has my career ... but on the East Coast! Nick has written several
produced shows ("Encounters With John O'Hara",
"That Time Of The Year"), tons of specialty
material and even dance videos! He works steadily as a
musical director and accompanist. And he's a professional music
copyist (he's got me there!) and runs his own studio. And,
of course, he writes great songs, which is why he's here. |

TONY
PENULTIMATE - is the pseudonym of Peter
Brooke Turner. Tony is best known for his towering performances
(he's 6'8"!) with the international touring group, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. His songs
have appeared in shows by the cabaret singer, Kate
Dimbleby (Music To Watch Boys By) and more recently on the
album, Bee for Bass by the session bassist Andy
Hamill. His last CD Mainly Manly Music was admired by songwriters
as diverse as Sir Tim Rice to Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees and is soon to be reissued
due to continued interest and his new album is called Soppy and the
Sentimentals. Tony has a great website. Go visit
him!

|
SIDNEY GOLDBERG - Mr. Goldberg contacted me with an e-mail that
read: "Check my website and you'll see I WRITE up a storm!" He
certainly does, with 10
plays, book and lyrics to 16 musicals, 10 screenplays, two novels,
a sitcom, three games shows and about 800 songs,
most represented here. The musicals offer a wide variety of lengths
and subjects. My favorite titles are "Everybody's
Jumpin' - A Suicidal Musical" and "A Portrait
of Who?".
Somebody produce this man, now! |
|
YOUNG BILLY - C.J. Majewski is fascinated with the life of
Billy The Kid, especially in what made him become an outlaw.
He's written "Young Billy" a musical
that follows Billy's path from schoolboy to killer, with input and arrangements
by Ed Goldfarb, author of "The Legend of Billy The
Kid". They both bring many years of writing experience
to this exciting new project. To find out more, click Billy's picture.

C. KELLY LOHR - Chris Lohr
is a sculptor. But after visiting Australia she was inspired
to write her first musical, with no training or experience of any kind.
Not only did she write it, she got the big show produced and
it's a hit! She draws on local Iowan talent. Chris: "We're
considering running a van along the Highway 30 corridor to pick up
cast members!" Congratulations to Lohr for following her dream. |
AUSTRALIA: THE MUSICAL |
|
HARRY MAYRONNE
- Based in New Orleans, Mayronne is a songwriter, musical
director and recording artist. He has two musicals currently
running at Le Chat Noir: "The Black &
White Blues" (pictured left) and "Hollywood Heaven". He also has an outrageous
puppet character named "Miss Viola!"
Check out the many lives of Harry Mayronne. |

|
LORNA BRIGHT - Lorna calls herself a "motivational musician." Her songs have been recorded in the pop, R&B, country, New Thought and gospel genres. Lorna travels throughout the world performing in concert, facilitating motivational workshops and, simply put, spreading joy. |
